“Social Work 260 Social Issues and Policy class, which is the second course in the policy sequence. Utilizing Karger and Stoesz’ text, American Social Welfare Policy this course build on the required course SWRK 230, History and General Methods of Social Work, as well as on the liberal arts foundation of American History and Political Science. Emphasis is space on the analysis and development of social welfare policy and services, as well as political processes, as a means of influencing policy-making and the furthering of social work goals.

During this course you will research and analyze three public policies at the local, state or national level. Each of these analyses will provide opportunities to examine issues that apply to people over the age of 65, to children, and/or to other populations-at-risk. Most importantly, you will have an opportunity to practice your advocacy skills during this course.”

I chose to focus my advocacy efforts to Senate File 401, SF 401, which is a bill that will allow sexual assault survivors in the state of Iowa to obtain a civil no contact order. Prior to this bill passing the house, Iowa only provided criminal protection orders to survivors. I felt this was an injustice to all survivors not only because sexual assault is one of the most under reported crimes, but it is also one of the most under arrested crimes. I feel that is it crucial to a survivors healing to feel protected.
